For this ongoing project, I explore interconnected themes within Times Square through a Jungian lens. Times Square, a globally recognized icon, epitomizes the grandeur and harsh realities of contemporary American life.
This exploration unravels the dichotomy within Times Square by juxtaposing its spectacle and struggle, prompting viewers to reflect on the societal tensions embedded in this landmark, mirroring the collective unconscious and its urban manifestations.
In Jungian psychology, the persona represents the social mask we wear to conform to societal norms. In Times Square, this persona is portrayed through vibrant billboards, neon lights, and bustling crowds, projecting an image of opportunity and cultural diversity. Conversely, the shadow aspect encompasses the less glamorous realities of hustlers, scammers, and marginalized individuals, revealing the city's underlying challenges and contrasts.
Times Square serves as a canvas for exploring the archetypal unconscious, showcasing diverse narratives—from Disney character impersonators and street performers to religious proselytizers, scammers and tourists. These figures symbolize universal human experiences projected onto the urban landscape.
Through photography, this project juxtaposes Times Square's symbolic allure and the reality of its inhabitants, inviting viewers to contrast its public image with its underlying social complexities, echoing Jung's concept of individuation—the integration of conscious and unconscious elements of the psyche.
In essence, Times Square stands as both a physical and psychological landscape, inviting exploration of inner and outer worlds while offering a vivid tableau of the collective unconscious. The project illuminates the complex interplay of hope, disillusionment, ambition, and resilience that characterizes life in 21st-century America.
