New York City:
The Diamond District
The Diamond District is a commercial stretch primarily on 47th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues in Midtown Manhattan comprising more than 4,000 jewelers and wholesalers.
Hawkers lurk on the street handing out pamphlets and selling diamonds wrapped in tissue paper from their pockets. Inside are the dealers, many of whom have been there for decades.
A thriving, bazaar-like marketplace — many deals are finalized with a traditional blessing (mazel und brucha, which mean “luck and blessing” in Hebrew) and handshake.
